Summary
Management of resources in a sustainable manner requires concerted efforts of the various stakeholders. Fisheries management has several challenges in terms of the resource having the nature of the commons, poor information status, highly varying means of extraction, and contradictions between traditional and formalised systems.
Objectives
Bring together representatives of fishing communities to discuss options for fisheries management in Pondicherry.
Status
- A two-day workshop was conducted to discuss future options for fisheries management for the Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. This was attended by about 65 stakeholders including vendors, boat owners, Government representatives, etc.
- The workshop documented the views of the participants on problems due to resource depletion; perception about the state of fish resources in the future; pathways to clear obstacles.
- This was followed up with discussions on pathways towards realizing future vision where the participants identified various areas of focus and action points that were required.
