Marine Science in India

FERAL entered into a partnership with the BCA Study Abroad network based in Elizabethtown, PA, USA to expand the scope of our students in India program. Starting with the Marine Science Program  conducted in Jan-April 2008, BCA and FERAL will work together in developing fall and summer programs.

Study Abroad Programme

Supporting Partner: Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pensylvania

Duration: 2006-2008

Cost: Variable - depends on number of students attending and duration of course
Several programs are conducted for students of Juniata College, which are designed to provide academic credit along with the opportunity to experience

Project Area:

1. Marine Sciences : covers the South East and South West coast and the Andaman islands.

This semester course introduces students to different aspects of marine science with a strong emphasis on field based excerises, individual research projects and lectures.

2. Sustainable Agriculture : Tamil Nadu, largely limited to Pondicherry and its surroundings.

Understanding different appoaches to working with the land is cenrtal to the course. Students interact with farmers using a wide variety of techniques in farming, work in a organic farm and attend lectures in the subject.

3. Culture, Class and Gender : Tamil Nadu, largely limited to Pondicherry and its surroundings.

Debating issues of equity, development and social structures, students get a grasp of the many ways in which gender issues influence and impact our actions.

Programmes with the Development Alternatives, New Delhi

Two programmes entitled "Clean India" and "Community based environment action" are nearing completion.

Duration: 2002 - 2007
Project Area: Pondicherry and Cuddalore
 
These activities focus on environmental assessment, awareness and advoacy by working with school students and local communities in Pondicherry and Cuddalore. Monitoring of water and air quality, implementing minor action projects, field trips and preparation of resource material is done with the actove participation of students and community members.
