About Us

Welcome to the official web-site of the Foundation for Ecological Research, Advocacy and Learning.

FERAL is a non-profit trust founded in 1997 and a certified Scientifc and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Minstry of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

Our mandate is to address issues of resource management, conservation, environment and health both at the grassroots and the policy level. To this end, we implement development and research projects and teach a wide range of courses. We collaborate with other institutes in India and abroad and engage with policy makers as well as grassroots stakeholders through awareness campaigns, workshop and seminars.

Our diverse team continue to make substantial contributions in wildlife biology and conservation, natural resources management and in education and skill building in these and allied areas. Our approach to addressing real world ecological issues is to use data driven ecological research, combined with use of the latest technological advancements. The bulk of our projects engage with local communities and stakeholders as partners in research and development.

Joining and Volunteering

Researchers

We encourage researchers who require institutional support for conducting research that falls within our overall mandate to formally apply to us. The institutional support we provide will include development of research proposal, grant raising, running the project, analysis and dissemination of results.

Students

Students interested in taking up projects for their Master’s dissertations either on campus or at one of our field sites are welcome. We also have a small students fund to support such short term research. Our current focus is the southern Western Ghats with interest on butterflies, birds, amphibians and freshwater fish. Post-graduate students and researchers interested in 3-6 months internships to work on existing datasets, which will require, basic to advance analytical skills and the ability to learn new analytical techniques, can contact us for more details .

Volunteers

Opportunities to participate in the work we do are available from time to time. All our projects are primarily field oriented and provide the space for learning new techniques and getting a taste of field and community related initiatives. If interested do email us a few lines about yourself, what you are interested in and why you would like to be involved.

Job Openings

Watch this space for job opening. Do not use the contact page for applications, unsolicited emails will not be considered. Please do not expect a response.

Support Us

Raising resources to support our work is a major challenge which we are trying to meet by turning to multiple sources of grants and volunteers. Traditionally, we've raised funds from government and non-government donors for specific projects. Now, we hope to sustain some of our longer term initiatives such as the conservation work with local communities and our training programmes, through corporate contributions and support from other foundations and trusts.

FERAL has an u/s. 12A (a) certificate from the Income Tax authorities and a 80G exemption. We also have a FCRA account and are elegible to receive foreign funds for activities within our mandate and objectives.

Please visit our page on how corporates can support us for more details on corporate contributions. For foundations, trusts and individuals who'd like to support our work, please visit the page on how foundations can support FERAL.
